About Me
My father tells me I became a dancer the minute I could stand on my own two feet. I even lied about my age at 2 years old so my new dance instructor would put me in with the big kids! Since then, dance has accompanied me everywhere and helped me accomplish things I never thought possible. Aside from it being a powerful tool connecting me to my Indian heritage and religious identity, it has also been a meditative practice that kept me composed when all of my roles and responsibilities as a student, daughter, and intern collided. Bharatanatyam, India’s most ancient dance form, has taught me about the power in equilibrium, through its use of mathematical pattern and strength to convey spiritual themes. Kuchipudi, a style that uses a brass plate and pot in its dances, has taught me the importance of balance and stability in all arenas of my life. Mohiniyattam, the dance of the female enchantress, has taught me about the power that lies beneath a graceful exterior. And finally, Bollywood has taught me the value of letting loose! My journey as a dancer has brought me life lessons beyond those in the studio. My dear Guru, Bina Menon, has instilled lessons of footwork, dedication and persistence in the classroom…. When she was ultimately teaching us patience, discipline, grace, and balance.
